Cost is one of the most important considerations when moving services to the cloud.  After all, an organization cannot estimate the value of moving services to the cloud without an accurate understanding of the costs.  The cloud journey is full of stories about companies who have moved to the cloud only to be surprised by bills that go well beyond their expectations.  But it does not have to be that way.  There are tools and resources available to estimate and managed cloud costs, eliminating the likelihood of any “surprise billing.”

Azure includes a service called Azure Cost Management that provides detailed information on Azure spending.  The tool allows organizations to view current Azure spending.  It provides an interface to drill down on costs over given date rages using metrics such as service types, regions, and service tags.  Also included with Azure Cost Management are cost forecasting and the ability to set budgets and budget-based alerts.

The Skylines Academy course, Azure Cost Management, takes the guesswork out of estimating and managing Azure costs.  The course is for anyone who manages or reviews azure spending. The course starts with an overview of the different account types available in Azure and how billing, payments, and permissions are scoped with different account types.  The course then provides a detailed introduction to Azure Cost Management, the Azure service freely available with most Azure subscriptions. 

Cost breakdown

The course uses the Azure Cost Management service to explore Azure costs, breaking down costs by multiple metrics, including service type, location, and resource groups.  The course goes deeper into using service tags to categorize costs better, a useful option for organizations that chargeback clients or departments or require expense details on the services they provide.

The Azure Cost Management course examines cost forecasting, predictions of future azure spending based on past cost data.  It includes information on saving money in Azure with Azure Reserved Instances, Hybrid Benefits, and Azure Advisor recommendations.  The course also includes information on using the cost analysis features of Azure Migrate to estimate the cost of moving on-premises services to Azure.
